Private Martial Arts Lessons in McCalla: Who They Are For

Group class is the heart of what we do, but it is not always the right place to begin. Private martial arts lessons in McCalla exist for the times when one instructor, one student, and one clear goal will get somebody further than a full room ever could.

Quick answer

We teach private martial arts lessons for all ages at The Dojang McCalla, one instructor to one student. Privates work best for the child who freezes at the door, the student catching up on material, and the adult whose schedule does not line up with our class times. Call us at (205) 747-2277 and we will match you with the right coach.

Who actually benefits from private lessons?

Four different kinds of people, and they want completely different things out of the same hour.

The nervous beginner. Some children, and plenty of adults, simply cannot make themselves walk into a room full of strangers who already know what they are doing. A private removes the audience entirely. You learn how to stand, how to move, and how a class actually runs, and by the time you join the group you are no longer the person who does not know where to put their feet.

The student catching up. A few weeks missed for travel, illness, or ball season, and suddenly class is drilling something you were never taught. One or two private sessions close that gap faster than a month of trying to piece it together from the back row.

The student who wants to move faster. Some people are simply hungry, and a private is the fastest way to fix technique because nothing is generalized and every single repetition gets corrected.

The schedule that does not fit. We teach Monday through Thursday between 3:00 and 8:00 PM, which does not work for every shift, every commute, or every family. Privates get scheduled inside those hours around what you actually have available.

Do privates replace regular class?

For most people, no, and we will tell you that plainly even though a private is the higher priced option.

A private builds technique quickly. Class is where that technique gets tested, because you need partners of different sizes and skill levels and the honest pressure of somebody who is not cooperating with you. That cannot be manufactured one on one.

The combination is what works. Privates to build it, class to prove it. Look at the class schedule and find the group sessions that fit around whatever private work you are doing. That said, we do teach a handful of students who train only privately, usually because of schedule or comfort level, and they make real progress.

Can my child take private lessons?

Yes, and for a hesitant child it is one of the most useful things a parent can do.

We see the same story constantly. A child wants to try martial arts, gets to the door, and locks up. A private with one of our instructors puts them on the mat with zero social pressure, and more often than not they walk into a group class within a few sessions as though it had been their idea the whole time. The same applies to the child who joined mid year and feels behind. Privates pair with our kids martial arts program rather than replacing it.

Who will you work with?

We match the instructor to the goal. If your interest is the ground game, head instructor Terry Adams has 20 years of teaching behind him and Jiu Jitsu as his primary focus, with a background in Yoshukai and boxing before that. If you want wrestling and takedowns, Japheth Hampton is a state champion wrestler. Kimberly Ramkishun rounds out the team, and Maxwell Tucker owns the school. Their full backgrounds are on the instructors page.

Families here consistently mention Mr. Terry by name in reviews, particularly for his patience with young children and with kids who need a little extra care. We hold a 5.0 rating across 57 Google reviews, and you can read them on our reviews page.

Private lessons work for the nervous beginner who is not ready for a group, the student catching up on missed material, the student who wants to progress faster, and anyone whose schedule does not fit our class times. We teach privates for all ages.
