Moogies: Martial Arts for Ages 4 to 7 in McCalla

If you have ever tried to get a four year old to stand in one place for sixty seconds, you already understand the challenge of teaching martial arts to preschoolers in McCalla. Moogies is the class we built specifically for that age, and it works because it was designed around how young children actually learn rather than around a watered down version of the adult class.

Quick answer

Moogies is our martial arts class for ages 4 to 7 at The Dojang McCalla. It teaches real fundamentals through short drills and games, while building the listening skills, self control, and coordination that four to seven year olds are still developing. Classes run Monday through Thursday, and the first one is free.

What makes Moogies different from the older kids class?

The content is real martial arts. The delivery is completely different, and it has to be.

A seven year old and a ten year old have different attention spans, different coordination, and different reasons for being in the room. Our Kids Martial Arts track for ages 8 to 12 can hold a long combination and work on the same technique for fifteen minutes. A Moogies class moves in shorter cycles, changes activity before attention breaks rather than after, and wraps the repetition inside games so that children get their hundred repetitions without ever feeling like they did.

Moogies classes are also shorter by design, at 45 minutes rather than an hour, because that is genuinely about the length of a productive session at that age.

What do four to seven year olds actually learn?

Two things at once, and honestly the second one matters more to most parents.

On the martial arts side, they learn stance, balance, basic strikes and blocks, how to move on the mat, and how to fall and get back up safely, which is one of the more underrated skills a small child can own.

On the other side, they learn the things that make a classroom work:

  • Standing still and listening when an adult is talking.
  • Waiting for a turn without melting down.
  • Following an instruction with two steps in it.
  • Keeping hands and feet to themselves while someone else works.
  • Trying something they are not good at yet, in front of other people.

That last one is the whole game. A child who learns at five that being bad at something is a temporary condition rather than a verdict carries that forward into school and everything after it.

Is my child too young?

Age 4 is our starting point, and we would rather be honest with you than sell you a class your child is not ready for.

The things that matter more than age are whether your child can separate from you for 45 minutes without distress and whether they can follow a simple instruction from an adult who is not a parent. Plenty of four year olds can do both. Some five year olds cannot yet, and that is completely normal.

Come to a free class and we will tell you what we see. If we think your child would do better starting in a few months, we will say so, and we will mean it.

When does Moogies meet?

Moogies runs four days a week. On Mondays and Wednesdays the class is at 5:30 to 6:15 PM. On Tuesdays and Thursdays there are two options, an early class at 3:45 to 4:30 PM for families who come straight from school, and the 5:30 to 6:15 PM class for everyone else.

That early Tuesday and Thursday slot is popular with parents of younger children for a simple reason. A four year old at 3:45 in the afternoon is a different child than a four year old at 6:00 in the evening. The full grid is on our schedule page.

Who teaches Moogies?

Our head instructor Terry Adams has spent 20 years teaching children and adults, in music as well as martial arts, and it shows most clearly in a room full of small children. Families here call him Mr. Terry, and the reviews that mention him by name tend to say the same things, that he is patient, that he builds confidence, and that he is welcoming to children who need a little extra care.

We hold a 5.0 rating across 57 Google reviews, and a good share of them are from parents of children this age. You can read them on our reviews page.

Bringing your child in

The first class is free, with no card and no commitment, and you stay and watch all of it.

Send them in a t-shirt and athletic shorts or pants, no shoes needed since we train barefoot. Arrive ten minutes early so your child can meet the instructor before class instead of being handed off at the door, and let us know if they are nervous so we can keep an eye on them. Some children are on the mat and grinning inside five minutes. Some need to sit and watch the first one, and that is fine too.

We are at 4823 Promenade Pkwy in Bessemer, and we work with families from McCalla, Bessemer, Hueytown, Hoover, and Pleasant Grove. Questions before you come? Call us at (205) 747-2277.
